Address your mai-guard (local security guard) by name; don’t call him mallam – this is rather cold and impersonal.

Increase his salary annually even if it is by N500. In his personal monetary calculations, he is doing better than the previous year.

Send him on a security course where the instruction is conducted in his native language.

When hosting a party at home encourage him to dress in his Sunday best. Give him a treat.

  • Take good care of him medically. He will remember and repay your kindness. Don’t say “I pay him salary he should be able to take care of himself”.
  • Give him a GSM phone with instructions to call you if there is an emergency. Teach him how to use the phone. He may be illiterate but he is not stupid.
  • Educate him to always clear with you or your household before granting access to any visitor. Install an intercom or 2-way radio system to enable him announce the arrival of a visitor from the gate house.
  • Provide a decent guard house.
  • Empower your guard/mai-guard to turn back visitors under certain circumstances. Back him up if he has followed the proper procedure, even if the rule affected your friend/relative. It is better to be safe than sorry.
  • Teach your guard/Mai-guard emergency procedures such as the use of fire extinguishers or activating an alarm system to alert you of an imminent attack/emergency at home.
  • In conclusion, remember you are the supervisor of the guard/mai- guard in your home security effort, if the guard/mai-guard fails then you have also failed.
